TaxAid and Tax Help for Older People

My Story

TaxAid and Tax Help for Older People are dedicated to supporting people in poverty who need expert tax help. We believe that no one should fall further into financial hardship paying tax bills they do not understand, and ofter do not even owe.

For the 9th year running, we are walking the London Legal Walk to raise money through our joint fundarising campaign, Bridge the Gap. Please support the charities by joining us on the walk and raising funds to support our vital work. If you are unable to walk with us, please support your friends and colleagues who are taking part by donating. We are hoping to exceed the amazing £10,000 that our supporters in tax and legal profession raised in 2023.

Event details:

  • Date: Tuesday 18th June
  • Location: Central London
  • Time: 4:30pm or 5:15pm
  • Walking teams: TaxAid, Tax Help for Older People

If you would like to join os on the walk, please contact Ayo Ogunwumiju at [email protected]

Why support our charity?

People always ask us 'How do people in poverty have complex tax problem? Isn't tax advice just for the super wealthy?'

It can seem like a low wage would equal straightforward taxes. However, complications can arise from working multiple jobs, workplace exploitation, the loss of a loved one, health complications, learning difficulties, or simple maistake and a lack of tax knowledge.

By raising funds for the charities, you will be helping people like Sophie. Sophie suffered from severe depression, alongside numerous other health conditions. This stemmed from a series of related misfortunes: an eviction, the loss of her business, the loss of her records and bank statements, and a broken relationship. She accumulated £10,000 in tax debt, it was too much for her to cope with. With our support we managed to piece together her business accounts and negotiate with HMRC on her behalf. As a result of this work, we found that her tax obligation came down to zero. In the end, HMRC actually owed Sophie £138.
