New Citizens Gateway 2024

My Story

Thank you for supporting our team in fundraising for the 20th anniversary of the London Legal Walk. We will walk 10km on Tuesday 18th June to support the most vulnerable in society to access life-changing free legal advice.

Our brilliant walking team so far is: Freshta Khandahari, Sara Golmakani, Vahid Kermani, Farahnaz Orandi, Latefa Guemar, Joe Shotton, Maryam Ansari, Roya Ebrahimi, Nazee Akbari, Shahrzad Khamoush, Farida Stanikzai, Elif Kayikci, Ellie Safe, and Jawharah Albakri.

We are walking with the Lady Chief Justice and thousands of lawyers who are raising funds for free legal advice agencies

We are fundraising directly for New Citizens' Gateway, and all funds donated to this page will be used for our advice team.

New Citizens' Gateway advises refugees and asylum seekers on welfare benefits, housing, health, education, employment, or immigration problems.

We provide advice over the phone, between 10 am-3 pm every Monday, Wednesday and Friday and face-to-face advice, by appointment.

If you or someone you know might need this, there is more information here.

Every day, we see people face the sharp end of the government's hostile environment.

There is an epidemic of homelessness for refugees evicted from hotels. Many people struggle to navigate our complex benefits, education and employment systems.

In 2021, NCG became a London-wide organisation, supporting clients beyond just Barnet. This has led to our already busy advice team has become increasingly stretched.

Our outreach advisers work across 3 hotels in Barnet, and the team managed a total of 21,500 enquiries in 2022- 2023.

Now more than ever, our advice team need your support to provide vital services to some of those most at need in our communities.

Here's a story of someone our advice team recently helped:

Fatimah*, a young woman from Kuwait, and her two younger siblings sought refuge in the UK.

Fatimah and her siblings, a 7-year-old diagnosed with autism, and a 15-year-old, were initially placed far from their disabled father upon arriving in the UK. They had not seen him for years.

NCG recognised that to support the children's wellbeing, it was crucial they were moved closer to their father, and that they were enrolled in a local school.

Collaborating with authorities, a successful appeal was made to relocate the family.

The family was later granted refugee status, marking a significant milestone in their journey.

Through early intervention, advocacy, and collaboration, their journey highlights the positive impact of supporting displaced families.

Your support is needed more than ever. Please sponsor our walkers as generously as you are able.

Many thanks for your support.
