Our Stories

Fred (not actual name) is 79 and lives with his wife in Chingford.

Fred looks after his wife who has agoraphobia and dementia. Fred has been increasingly short of breath over the past few months. Recently he had some incontinence and slipped when walking, lacerating his right shin which requires daily dressings. His mobility is significantly decreased which has impacted on his daily walks.  Fred recently had an operation to remove a cataract in his left eye. He says that the operation has done him no good and that he cannot see anything at all now from his left eye. Fred does most of the housework.

Fred and is wife are finding the increase in their household bills too much to pay. He received a letter from British Gas stating that he needs to pay £500. He already has a payment plan for which he pays £25 per month for unpaid bills of £820. Fred said “with my health issues and looking after my wife I forgot to increase my direct debit payment amount and paid no attention to the letters coming in. I guess I had my head in the sand, I have too much to manage”.

After we completed a benefit calculation for Fred, we helped him claim a reduction in their Council Tax, Attendance Allowance for his wife, and obtain a Blue Badge. We were also able to apply for a grant who awarded him £400 towards his energy bill.

Fred was delighted with the extra financial support and he used the Attendance Allowance benefit to pay for a carer to come in the mornings to supervise his wife when getting washed and dressed.

Mrs A has used Age UK Waltham Forest Information and Advice service on many occasions on behalf of her parents. Sadly, her father passed away two years ago and Age UK Waltham Forest provided information on Funeral Benefits.

Mrs As mother, Mrs B has had two strokes, is partially sighted, has diabetes, and is in the early stages of Alzheimer’s.Mrs A and her husband are her main carers. They accompany Mrs B on her frequent medical appointments and take her to the shops, or do her shopping for her.

Mrs A says that her mother likes to push the trolley in the supermarket because it gives her support but also because, ‘She thinks that if she was seen with a walking stick or a frame everyone would know she lacks mobility, but if she is seen using a trolley people will think she is only doing her shopping. Although I have to steer the trolley as she is sometimes to weak to control it.'

Mrs A says, ‘I visit my mum regularly, but I do not want to take her independence away, she has always been independent, so I do not want to be stopping her from doing some of the things she is able to do.’

Age UK Waltham Forest have helped Mrs A and her mother to claim Attendance Allowance and Council Tax benefits as well as securing a blue-badge. We have also provided guidance and support with completing a Power of Attorney application form.

Mrs A says ‘A lot of the forms are difficult and nerve racking... the support I was given made it easier to do.Having a power of attorney has made a huge difference for the family. Mrs A explains, ‘It is a great help, it means that I have taken charge of my Mum’s financial welfare and health…I pick up money as I wish for her, and sort out her bills and arrange for direct debits and standing orders. It makes it easier for me and it makes her feel at ease knowing that her bills are being paid.

Age UK Waltham Forest have also referred mum to a day centre which she attends once a week and fully enjoys.
